Caring for your carpet

If you’ve bought a new carpet from us, then I’ve no doubt that you’ll want to keep it looking spick and span.

But what do you have to do to keep your carpet looking great?

Well, we’ve put together a brief guide to help.

The most important part of keeping a carpet cleaning is regular vacuuming. You should look to vacuum your carpet at least once a week to keep soil and dust at bay. At the very least, make sure that you’re vacuuming parts of the carpet that endure heavy footfall regularly.

These heavy footfall areas are usually the reason carpets suffer a quick demise. If soil and other dirt is tread into that area, and then walked about the rest of the house it’ll quickly deteriorate. Always, always make sure entrance ways etc are well taken care of.

Stains are another huge problem for carpets. I’m sure that if you’ve just bought a new one you’re going to be extra careful to avoid spillages. But as time goes on you’ll become less careful and I’m sure that a spillage will occur eventually.

When it does, deal with it as soon as possible. They’re always easier to get rid of if you get to cleaning them straight away.

Your carpet will, at some point, reach a stage where it needs a thorough cleaning. It’s up to you whether you bring in a professional or do it yourself.

If you chose the latter then there are a few things you need to be aware of. Firstly, you’re going to need to pick up some specialist carpet cleaning products. There’s plenty on the market and I’d say that you should always have some carpet care product in your cupboard. You never know when you might spot a stain!

You should avoid using household detergents too. They aren’t designed for use on carpets and whilst they might clean them, over time they’ll damage your carpet.

Alternatively you could hire a carpet cleaning machine. This is a little more expensive but if you have a large surface covered with carpet to tackle, it’s a more sensible option.

If you’re unsure at all about cleaning your carpet always consider a professional. You don’t want to turn a stain into a gaping hole!
